BC: Trudeau Liberals Approve LNG in BC

Author: Jordan Bateman 2016/09/28

Big news in BC is the Trudeau government’s approval of the Pacific Northwest (Petronas) LNG project, which includes a pipeline from northeast BC to the Prince Rupert area, and a major plant on Lulu Island, which will ship the LNG to Asia.

Of course, it all hinges on Petronas actually giving a green light to the $11.4 billion investment. From the Sun:

Approval was announced late Tuesday after Federal Environment Minister Catherine McKenna, Natural Resources Minister Jim Carr and Fisheries Minister Dominic LeBlanc travelled to Richmond after a cabinet meeting earlier in the day.

… Carr said the project will deliver thousands of good, middle-class jobs, “and will help pay for schools and roads, and social programs that enrich people’s lives.”

True enough. The best way to keep taxes low is to grow the economy, bringing more taxpayers into the fold to carry the burden of government.

But it will be fascinating to see how this affects the Trudeau government’s standing in BC. Many of their candidates, most notably Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Reybould, campaigned openly against projects like LNG and the Site C dam. Now, they’re approving them.

Will an oil pipeline from Alberta be next?
